BDE - August 9, 1884 (4): James R. Sparrow - Greenpoint builder. Died August 8, 1886, 76 years old. Born October 20, 1810. Manufactured casks for whalers, which led to him entering the oil trade. From that he "drifted into the boot and shoe jobbing trade", and then into the shipping business. From there, he became a builder, his most prolific profession. ca. 1861 he moved his operation to Greenpoint, and invested heavily there. All of his buidings were constructed of brick or stone. First man in Greenpoint to build on a large scale.
